Blog 8 Inclusive Gaming
As someone who enjoys playing video games, this is a topic that has become very interesting to me. I definitely have noticed a lot of changes over the course of time with some of the video games that I play. Inclusive gaming is a very important topic that involves games and gaming communities being accepting and acceptable to a large array of players. Inclusive Gaming is such a big topic because of the power that video games hold nowadays. It gives people a sense of belonging, community and representing something bigger than just video games. With people facing a variety of different physical issues and societal barriers, video games serve as a platform for those with disabilities to connect and interact virtually through video games.
One huge step forward that video games have taken is allowing customization for your character in whatever game it is. Having the option to customize your gender, ethnicity and your body type allows gamers to have a very personalized experience. I personally noticed this a lot in the newer versions of Call of Duty and being able to have a female character, whereas before you could only pick a male. Another game I have noticed this in is the NBA 2k series. They recently added the feature to do have your own created player be a WNBA player. I thought it was a cool addition to the game because it was something we've never really seen before.
Another development we have seen as pointed out in the article, " Why Inclusive Gaming Matters: Benefits Beyond Entertainment" is the push for game developers trying to make their game accessible to all players regardless of physical capabilities. The article states, "Colorblind modes are being integrated to aid visually impaired players, and text-to-speech features help those with reading difficulties or auditory preferences. These steps signal a shift in the industry, highlighting the growing importance of inclusion and accessibility in game design".
After learning more about inclusive gaming I hope that one day it becomes a normal procedure and something that is not considered "special" or different. It allows for a more persobalized experience for gamers while accomadating for everyone's lifestyle.
