Blog 10 Artificial Intelligence
After reviewing Google's AI principles I would say they are more aspirational than enforceable. Google says they emphasize goals such as responsibility, security, privacy, and safety but their principles have no concrete measures that lay out guidelines they take to ensure these goals are met. The three main principles they have stated on their Artificial Intelligence principle website are Bold Innovation, Responsible development and deployment, and Collaborative progress, together. However, Google didn't mention any surveillance over these principles which makes it hard for them to actually enforce these principles. Since there is no governing bodies over there outlined principles, it is very hard to verify if these guidelines are being practiced. We can tell if a tech giant like Google is living up to its ethical commitments by paying attention to what it actually does, not just what it says. We must examine their behavior with how it reports its testing efforts and the measures they are taking regarding the different partnerships and opportunities around Artificial Intelligence. Another way we can tell if they are living up to their ethical commitments is examining how they respond to conflict and when problems arise. We must take account that they are acknowledging harm, fixing the issues, and communicating to the public about the problem and how they have fixed them and made it better. In the end, what really shows whether Google is serious about its ethical commitments isn’t the promises it makes on its website, but how its AI actually behaves in the real world and whether the company is willing to let outside experts hold them accountable.
