Blog 7 Digital Divide
The digital divide is an issue that is remaining persistent especially with the new technological advancements that are being made everyday. This is an issue that we should definitely be paying attention to and trying to find ways to bridge the gap. The first big reason we need to pay attention to the divide is the growing disparities in the education system. Since the pandemic, school systems have shifted a lot of work to be completed online on devices such as laptops, smartphones and computers. Student's that lack access to the internet and these devices face a big set back in them completing coursework and learning basic digital skills. Another reason we should care about the divide is different economic opportunities. With the workplace going more digital more jobs are being offered online. Individuals who have a lack of access to digital services are at a severe disadvantage when seeing various job opportunities. It also sets these individuals behind because they lack the skills of the positions that need filling in the new digital workplace. Another reason the divide is a big deal is with healthcare systems. Doctor's offices and medical institutions are going virtual as well and use online scheduling, virtual calls and offering care. Those who are lacking in the digital world now face barriers to getting proper healthcare as well. One way I think we can help bridge the gap is by implementing affordable programs that can help reduce cost for low-income households to have access to the digital world. Making partnerships with local providers and incentivize them to help serve our underserved communities. Another solutions could be providing people with access to these different devices through schools, libraries and other community organizations. This could help people to learn basic skills on the internet and ensuring access for all people. I also think creating programs that teach people how to use the internet and these devices would be super beneficial. It would be offered to help adults, students, and low income families.
